Facebook Safety Page

Today, Facebook launched a new Facebook Safety Page, where they’ll regularly post dynamic content to complement the resources in the expanded Safety Center that they introduced in April. The Safety Page will highlight new initiatives to keep people on Facebook safe, valuable educational materials from Internet safety experts including the members of our Safety Advisory Board, and relevant news coverage.

The Safety Page is modeled after their popular Security Page, which discusses best practices for maintaining data security and has grown to over 2.2 million fans.

By liking the Safety Page, you also can make safety a regular part of your Facebook experience.

What are the Best Social Media Sites and Tools to Use to Market My Tourism Business?

The best way to figure out which social media tools or platforms are the best for you is to try them out. All you usually need to do is go to each site and sign up for a free account i.e. on Facebook or Blogger.com.

No one has time to surf all the social networking sites. You can’t do everything at once. Try focusing on a few networks and sites at a time to determine which will help you best connect with your customers or generate the most traffic. Once you’ve built a reputation, you can move on to the next on your list.

It’s fine if you don’t jump on the bandwagon of every new site. Take some time to read reviews and watch before deciding to make a move.

Getting involved in a site is the only way to really understand how it operates. Even then, you need to be prepared for things not to work. There are no guarantees of success although with experience, you’ll learn what’s likely to click with your users.

ALERT: There Is Not A Hacker Door In Your Facebook Friends List

Right now there is a rumor spreading around Facebook about there being a new security vulnerability in Facebook accounts and it’s absolutely inaccurate. Information similar to this was spread previously in something called the “Automation Labs bug“. In both instances the rumor was absolutely false.

Here’s what the message says that’s being spread around Facebook:

… found…. Hacker in door in our friends list!….We are now listed as friends of ourselves! You need to delete yourself from your friends list to close the door to hackers. To do this … Go to Account, go to edit friends, there search for your name on the list and click …the X to get your name removed

Essentially someone has found a strange bug: when you search through your friends list, you show up as a friend of yourself. Even if you “delete” yourself as a friend, you’ll continue to show up as a friend once you refresh the page. The one thing that users need to know is that their accounts have not been compromised in any way. Rather than blindly participating in the rumor spreading, let your friends know that this information is completely false.

Facebook – The Basics

To begin, let’s take a look at the most popular social media network, with a quick primer on what’s good and not-so-good about it.

Facebook is, by numbers alone, the most popular social networking site today, with more than 400 million registered users. It’s a site that lets people share updates, photo videos, articles, and more with “Friends,” who they have to approve to be in their network. Businesses and organizations can create “Fan Pages,” which other Facebook users can become fans of, just like they do sports teams, musicians, and celebrities. [Read more…]

The Problem With Community Pages

facebook-business-promotion

This post is by William Beutler, Innovation Manager at New Media Strategies, an online marketing and intelligence firm in Arlington, Virginia.

Among the changes announced at F8 last week, the one most users are likely aware of already is the introduction of Community Pages and the linking of user profiles to them.

This has caused a great deal of confusion for both the average user as well as the companies and brands who maintain a presence on Facebook. (In the interests of disclosure, I have clients for whom this is an issue, although I will not use them as examples.)

In my view, Facebook now faces a number of issues to resolve that could have been avoided if the rollout had been planned more carefully: at present, Community Pages are hurt by a lack of transparency, a plethora of redundancy and too little explanation of their quirks. [Read more…]
